Summary

The definitive graphic novel adaptation of Dune, the groundbreaking science-fiction classic by Frank Herbert

Dune, Frank Herbert’s epic science-fiction masterpiece set in the far future amidst a sprawling feudal interstellar society, tells the story of Paul Atreides as he and his family accept control of the desert planet Arrakis。 A stunning blend of adventure and mysticism, environmentalism, and politics, Dune is a powerful, fanstastical tale that takes an unprecedented look into our universe, and is transformed by the graphic novel format。 Brian Herbert and Kevin J。 Anderson’s adaptation retains the integrity of the original novel, and Raúl Allén and Patricia Martín’s magnificent illustrations, along with cover art by Bill Sienkiewicz, bring the book to life for a new generation of readers。

I gave this book 5 stars for the graphic art。 I have read this book many years ago and loved it。 I look forward to the next installment。

It started off slow but later it kept me intrigued and curious at the end。 The graphics were okay, sort of gloomy and antique。

Jeff Thomas

A pretty detailed, and faithful version of the original, as a graphic novel。 Well done。

Tom Peryam

Well-executed graphic novel adaptation。

It was at the beginning very complicated with all the different worlds and places。 It got better but I think the book handles this better so I am going to read the book as well。 The ideas are very unique and I think I will really like this series。

Garrick Jones

One of the greatest classics of science fiction, a precursor to Star Wars in many ways。 The universe Herbert created in the six books of the series is almost unparalleled。 Highly recommended。

Great option for Dune Rookies like myself!I like to think of this graphic novel as the appetizer and cocktail to enjoy before reading the novel (especially since I polished off this comic in 4 hours)。 I'm currently reading the sans-images novel now and I'm so thankful I read this first! The illustrations are beautiful and help so much with world building of the Dune environments, people, technology, etc。 I had the Dune wiki open the whole time I read this, searching every new sci-fi term I encou Great option for Dune Rookies like myself!I like to think of this graphic novel as the appetizer and cocktail to enjoy before reading the novel (especially since I polished off this comic in 4 hours)。 I'm currently reading the sans-images novel now and I'm so thankful I read this first! The cooling greens and blues! It was a perfect contrast to the yellows and beiges of Arrakis。 (hide spoiler)]I also really loved how the worms looked :) Finally that one spongebob episode about the Alaskan Bull Worm makes sense 。。。more

This was really really good。 Great adaptation。 Broken up into parts。 Can’t wait for the next installment。 Back to the official book now。 Can’t wait for the movie!

The art was very, the story is compelling, but also confusing, as I think most sci-fi/fantasy is without proper setup。 I read the graphic novel in hopes it would help me understand the exposition before reading the actual novel, and while I understand it more, I have lots of questions still。 The art though, for the graphic novel, is well done。

Disclaimer: For anyone wanting to read this graphic novel adaption, just know that this only covers the first part of the book Dune。 That being said this is going to be a pretty short and sweet review。 This was adapted for the graphic novel format by Brian Herbert & Kevin J。 Anderson who have previously written a bunch of prequel and sequel books relating to Frank Herbert's Dune series so it comes as no surprise for this to be a pretty great adaption of Book 1。 It took a while for me to get used Disclaimer: For anyone wanting to read this graphic novel adaption, just know that this only covers the first part of the book Dune。 That being said this is going to be a pretty short and sweet review。 This was adapted for the graphic novel format by Brian Herbert & Kevin J。 Anderson who have previously written a bunch of prequel and sequel books relating to Frank Herbert's Dune series so it comes as no surprise for this to be a pretty great adaption of Book 1。 It took a while for me to get used to the art style, but after a while it seemed to fit pretty well。 Despite lacking moments of info dumps/worldbuilding, the art does a good job of giving the readers a visual idea about the kind of world this takes place in。 Not sure if the graphic novel influenced the look and function of the suits and gear for the upcoming adaption or vise versa but it all came together pretty nicely and looks vastly similar but that is by no means a bad thing。 Looking forward to reading Book 2's (part 2) GN adaption and if it stays faithful to the book like Book 1 has done so far。 。。。more

The original Dune novel is broken up into three parts。 This graphic novel adaptation covers the first part。 I read this immediately after reading the first part of the novel for the first time (and before I read the rest of the book) and was quite impressed。 I gave it 4 stars。 Here are my thoughts:1。 It was extremely true to the book。 It seemed quite clear and concise。 I can't say if it would be a bit confusing if you hadn't read the novel as my mind may have filled in parts that were omitted, b The original Dune novel is broken up into three parts。 This graphic novel adaptation covers the first part。 I read this immediately after reading the first part of the novel for the first time (and before I read the rest of the book) and was quite impressed。 I gave it 4 stars。 Here are my thoughts:1。 It was extremely true to the book。 It seemed quite clear and concise。 I can't say if it would be a bit confusing if you hadn't read the novel as my mind may have filled in parts that were omitted, but I don't think so。2。 I wouldn't say the art was amazing or gorgeous, but the art was perfect in that each character had their own look and it was always clear what was going on。 That's what I always look for mostly in the art of graphic novels。3。 That being said, there weren't any clever takes or interpretations I can think of。 It was by the book, no pun intended。I was really impressed with this adaptation and will likely read the other two when they come out, if I still care about Dune after seeing the upcoming movie。 。。。more

Read this graphic novel to see if I would be interested in the world of Dune (since it's only 1/3 of the first novel)。 It has beautiful images and and I think it told the story well。 Read this graphic novel to see if I would be interested in the world of Dune (since it's only 1/3 of the first novel)。 It has beautiful images and and I think it told the story well。 。。。more

This was a faithful adaption of the first part of the Dune novel。 I was teetering on giving it an extra star, but there was something about the artwork that I just didn't enjoy。 The backgrounds were all beautifully rendered, but the illustration of the characters just wasn't for me。 I also think that something is lost from the story when the rich inner lives of the characters are cut out, which inevitably will happen when a visual adaptation takes place。 This was a faithful adaption of the first part of the Dune novel。 I was teetering on giving it an extra star, but there was something about the artwork that I just didn't enjoy。 The backgrounds were all beautifully rendered, but the illustration of the characters just wasn't for me。 I also think that something is lost from the story when the rich inner lives of the characters are cut out, which inevitably will happen when a visual adaptation takes place。 。。。more

Overall, this adaptation feels rushed and does a poor job of conveying important ideas and details from Dune, so it feels like it lacks intensity and gravity。 I wouldn't recommend for somebody who hasn't already read the original novel。 Otherwise, it's short enough that it doesn't feel like a wasted read。The art design is good and I like the use of color。 Overall, this adaptation feels rushed and does a poor job of conveying important ideas and details from Dune, so it feels like it lacks intensity and gravity。 I wouldn't recommend for somebody who hasn't already read the original novel。 Otherwise, it's short enough that it doesn't feel like a wasted read。The art design is good and I like the use of color。 。。。more

I want to start by saying that I have no background knowledge of Dune at all。 Besides the fact that I work in a library and have heard it uttered that Dune and Herbert are the epitome of science-fiction literature, up there with Asimov and Dick。 I also know that graphic novels are adaptations and as such tend to leave a lot on the cutting room floor。 That being said, this did a really good job of world building in all aspects。 I understood everything that was going on really enjoyed the story so I want to start by saying that I have no background knowledge of Dune at all。 Besides the fact that I work in a library and have heard it uttered that Dune and Herbert are the epitome of science-fiction literature, up there with Asimov and Dick。 I also know that graphic novels are adaptations and as such tend to leave a lot on the cutting room floor。 That being said, this did a really good job of world building in all aspects。 I understood everything that was going on really enjoyed the story so far。 As I understand it, this is only part 1 of a 3-part adaptation of the first book。 So I look forward to reading more when they are released。 The storytelling I would have put at a 4 star, but I really could care less for the blurriness of the artwork (2 star)。 So I'm settling on a 3。 。。。more

4。5 stars, this was so much fun to read! The only down side came about when there was more story than the art could accommodate for, which hindered the flow of the story and created a few jumpy parts。 Other than that, this was a joy。 If Dune wasn't such a long book, I would read it immediately after this! 4。5 stars, this was so much fun to read! I could never call myself a real fan of Dune, but I do recognize the importance of its place in the science-fiction canon。 Yet for all the work and care that went into this graphic novel - the first of three- all the names associated with it and their deep ties to the franchise, it can't help feeling。。。safe。Above all, Herbert's epic is a masterwork in worldbuilding, with incredible imagery and an intricate, sprawling history of which seemingly endless stories can be told。 Except for a few choice I could never call myself a real fan of Dune, but I do recognize the importance of its place in the science-fiction canon。 Yet for all the work and care that went into this graphic novel - the first of three- all the names associated with it and their deep ties to the franchise, it can't help feeling。。。safe。Above all, Herbert's epic is a masterwork in worldbuilding, with incredible imagery and an intricate, sprawling history of which seemingly endless stories can be told。 Except for a few choice panels (the first worm sighting comes to mind), the art does little to capture this, instead settling for a style that feels disappointingly conventional or at least lacking any of that compelling weirdness the David Lynch adaptation had。 The writing does its best to recreate or at least paraphrase the original text, but still fails to use the medium effectively, combining text and image in awkward ways or forcing too much information into one panel。 And I was quite shocked by a few instances of truly sloppy editing, with words split between two lines in nonsensical ways。Yet the core premise, the thing that draws in so many readers and makes fans, remains relatively intact。 The relationships, the politics, the intrigue - look close and they can be found。 If you have not read the original novel you likely won't understand what all the fuss is about, especially since this is a story whose conclusion will not come for a while yet。 For devotees, though, this is a respectable if sadly uninspired interpretation。 。。。more

A faithful comic book adaptation of Herbert's sci-fi classic Dune, which serves as a respectful and cleverly constructed visualisation。 In many ways this is more approachable than the original novel, in others however, lacks the mysticism and magic of it source material。 Dune: the Graphic Novel includes an introduction stating that it did not mean to reinterpret the novel, but to adapt it faithfully and while not reconstructing every gesture, certainly aiming to keep its essence。 The story there A faithful comic book adaptation of Herbert's sci-fi classic Dune, which serves as a respectful and cleverly constructed visualisation。 In many ways this is more approachable than the original novel, in others however, lacks the mysticism and magic of it source material。 Dune: the Graphic Novel includes an introduction stating that it did not mean to reinterpret the novel, but to adapt it faithfully and while not reconstructing every gesture, certainly aiming to keep its essence。 The story therefore is the same: we follow young Paul Atreides and his family on the desert planet Arrakis, where they have to deal with adventures, betrayal and politics。 This first out of three planned volumes covers the story up until the point where (view spoiler)[Paul and Jessica end up stranded in the desert, realising that Paul is indeed the Kwisatz Haderach。 (hide spoiler)]Don't expect anything new in here。 Hardcore fans and purists will be pleased, as the authors kept their word of treating their source material respectfully。 When reading the novel, it took me a while to get used to all the concepts of mind-reading and controlling, so I was curious how it would translate onto the (visual) page。 Turns out pretty well! The story was easy to follow, thought beware that I am saying that as someone already familiar with the plot。 I can imagine that if this ends up being your introduction to the story, its magic will essentially be lost, as it does lack the intricacies and atmospheric integrity。 The art felt nice, but I kept wishing for more。 I don't have specific complaints, it's just that with a world so rich and thought-provoking I would have wished for something more。 The colouring felt bland, the compositions generic。 Not bad either, but since this is the visual adaptation of an established novel, the visuals could or maybe even should have been the selling point of this and that it certainly wasn't。 All in all, a pleasant refresher of a story and a welcomed excuse to dive back into the world of Arrakis。 ["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]> 。。。more

This graphic novel adaptation covers about half of Frank Herbert's original Dune, ending almost on a cliffhanger as a result。 It tells that story well enough。 Some of the scenes actually play out quite effectively with the visuals here。 Others look a little less impressive than one could imagine。Just speaking to the decision to split up this adaptation, I'd say it mostly works (I imagine that's how the film will be split too)。 There's a nice arc with Duke Leto, and Paul has some development too。 This graphic novel adaptation covers about half of Frank Herbert's original Dune, ending almost on a cliffhanger as a result。 It tells that story well enough。 Some of the scenes actually play out quite effectively with the visuals here。 Others look a little less impressive than one could imagine。Just speaking to the decision to split up this adaptation, I'd say it mostly works (I imagine that's how the film will be split too)。 There's a nice arc with Duke Leto, and Paul has some development too。 Unfortunately, the Fremen are sidelined a little bit more in the first half of that story, but their presence is well-rendered too。I don't have too much else to say。 The art was good, but sometimes bad。 The coloring was excellent。 This would probably be a good entry for people who've never read the book, but it might be good to wait for the second half to be published in Spring 2022。 。。。more

The art was reasonably attractive and used color well。 The device of color-coded thought balloons to indicate who was thinking each aside worked effectively, even if it was sometimes clunky。 Some of the dialogue could have used a spot of attention。 I read Dune probably 20 years ago so I thought I'd read this as a refresher before the movie。 I'm not that into the politics part, and this ends right where things get interesting。 Paul comes off kind of dickish in this, don't know if that's coming at The art was reasonably attractive and used color well。 The device of color-coded thought balloons to indicate who was thinking each aside worked effectively, even if it was sometimes clunky。 Some of the dialogue could have used a spot of attention。 I read Dune probably 20 years ago so I thought I'd read this as a refresher before the movie。 I'm not that into the politics part, and this ends right where things get interesting。 Paul comes off kind of dickish in this, don't know if that's coming at it from my thirties versus being a teenager。 。。。more
